Downtown Portland, OR
This project reorganizes and upgrades the offices of this dynamic powerhouse social justice organization, by and for people experiencing houselessness. With great aspirations and a very tight budget, the design is an expression of community design workshops involving the population, staff, and leadership of Street Roots. Goals and objectives, programmatic elements, and logistical strategies emerged from within the community itself and momentum built until the community-based build that occurred during May and June of 2019.
Key design outcomes include better organized shared and individual workspaces, acoustical separation and quieter overall workspaces, much more natural light penetrating into the space, and the use of natural materials to help "de-institutionalize" the work environment.
